A steep climb up from the Riberot valley to the high mountains with spectacular views of Mt. Valier, the Ariege’s highest mountain.

This section of the GR10 in the Ariege drops down steeply to the Riberot valley and the smart Maison du Valier gite d’etape. There are great views en route of Mt Valier, the Ariege’s highest mountain at 2,838 m.

A recent visit to the Somme area of northern France gave us the opportunity to do this Great War battlefield walk which included a visit to the memorial of the Canadian Newfoundland regiment.

On this section the GR10 continues on an upward trajectory with a stunning walk to some of the nicest cabins in the Ariege.

A lovely downhill section of theGR10, zig zagging through ferns on the open hillside and then into a beautiful beech forest to the quiet Orle valley.

From Eylie, the GR10 climbs steeply to the spectacular wide open scenery at the Col de l’ Arech, coinciding in places with old mining pylons.

The GR 10 is one of France’s iconic walking tracks. From Hendaye on the Atlantic to Banyuls-sur-Mer in the Mediterranean, it follows the Pyrenees for 866 km, or 536 miles, in a spectacular succession of little villages, valleys, high cols and wild mountain scenery.
